The RMU1-LITE remote monitor is part of the MOBILTEX CorTalk family of cathodic protection (CP) monitoring and control products. The RMU1-LITE is a low cost, high reliability device intended to remotely monitor AC/DC potentials (both on and instant-off) on a CP protected structure. One or two reference half cells may be installed as references for the potential measurements; when two reference half cells are installed, validation of reference half-cell calibration can be ascertained remotely.
The device is available in satellite (RMU1S LITE) and cellular (RMU1G LITE) communication configurations. The field hardware consists of a single component that is usually mounted inside an industry standard 3” plastic test station. The device operates for 10+ years from a set of small, internal, low cost, field replaceable batteries. This self-powered solution can be used to monitor potentials without the requirement for nearby line or solar power sources. The RMU1 has integral high-energy surge suppression and provides unprecedented lightning immunity because there are no connections to electrical ground. Once test points are equipped with an RMU1 LITE, annual potential surveys can be performed remotely from an office environment through a simple web-based control and data platform. Data quality can then be improved by obtaining those same readings at shorter intervals throughout the year, enabling understanding of seasonal variations on the CP system.
Offering essential, fit-for-purpose functionality, the RMU1-LITE is an ideal solution to cost-effectively scale IIoT capabilities and gain the benefits that large deployment remote data collection can bring to pipeline operation and maintenance. A unique digital signal processing algorithm allows on and instant off potentials to be accurately measured by simply cycling cathodic protection on a structure in a periodic manner for a short period of time.

He has worked on drilling engineering projects for majors IOC’s, as well as small independents, in deepwater and onshore. He has rigsite experience and has been a part of several industry technological advancements. The platform provides the foundation for ESG reporting and regulatory compliance through advanced data capture, regulatory compliance algorithms, and data presentation. The platform is a secure cloud-based tool that provides detailed criteria air contaminant and greenhouse gas emissions calculations, tracking and reporting for provincial and federal regulations.
Deeply rooted in the cleantech and energy ecosystem, John is President and Chief Executive Officer of NGIF Capital Corporation and Managing Partner of NGIF Cleantech Ventures, Canada’s first venture capital firm and venture fund created by and for Canada’s natural gas sector. He is involved in all aspects of the enterprise including the responsibility of NGIF Industry Grants, the NGIF Emissions Testing Centre and NGIF Cleantech Ventures.
John has led NGIF through growth and in its four years of raising capital, making investments, and managing its portfolio, it has provided financing to over 50 startups, de-risking clean technology solutions in Canada’s gas industry. He has been integral to building NGIF’s team and its reputation in the innovation community, taking new companies and their ideas from concept to commercialization.
John’s additional contributions to innovation include occupying numerous board functions and duties. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of the $100M Clean Resources Innovation Network (CRIN) and is a member of the International Gas Union’s Research, Development, and Innovation Committee.
John earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto in Environmental Science and is a graduate of the Berkley Venture Capital Executive Program.
Willowglen Systems has a proven Machine Learning (ML) solution that uses predictive analytics to achieve practical results. By integrating ML technology into a production, next-generation SCADA system we reduced the operating cost of a major pipeline by 28.4 percent.
At this point, we have practical results, lessons learned, and technical know-how that we'd like to share with the community. The use cases would show how the ML tech helped minimize operational costs (reduced pressure volatility, electrical savings, maximized throughput) with 20%-40% monthly savings.

Spartan Controls recently implemented a Pump monitoring project that leverages Emerson’s Plantweb Optics Analytics with machine learning and industry-based expertise. This is to ensure our customers Pumps are running at the best operational health and performance by detecting mechanical / process abnormal behavior, identifying root causes of problems, and predicting future performance. This solution includes Emerson’s AMS Wireless Vibration and Temperature monitoring sensors that are incorporated with existing process monitoring values into a centralized software server for the deployment of real-time analytics that include automated root cause analysis, predictive models, workflows and much more.
Mechanical damage is one of the leading causes of serious pipeline incidents globally each year (CER, PHMSA, CONCAWE). Unfortunately, many in-line inspection (ILI) systems have difficulties inspecting the dent region for coincidental gouging. T.D. Williamson solved the issue with the development of the Multiple Data Set (MDS) platform, in conjunction with the recently release gouge classifier and sizer. Now pipeline operators can rely on the accurate classification of coincident gouges with dents, in contrast to the often less threatening low-level coincident corrosion located within a dent. Armed with the proper classification and depth sizing of each metal loss anomaly, pipeline operators can confidently build mitigation programs that address pipeline mechanical damage threats.
GOLD has developed several proprietary algorithms that have specific application to the upstream oil & gas sector. One of the biggest issues we have encountered is the lack of computing capability available in typical SCADA/DCS systems. GOLD is developing a hybrid edge and cloud-based computing solution which has the potential to bring robust cost-effective computational leak detection systems to an industry space where these systems are typically not deployed. Leveraging the scalability and functionality that cloud computing enables, we will be able to utilize machine learning to continually improve our leak detection algorithm deployments and continually update these improvements to the edge devices deployed in the field.
